The Famous Song “Smuglyanka”

During the Great Patriotic War, the well-known song “Smuglyanka” was perceived as a reflection of the struggle for the liberation of Moldova.

In 1940, composer Anatoly Novikov and poet Yakov Shvedov wrote a musical suite dedicated to the events of the Civil War. Then, in 1944, the Red Banner Ensemble of the Soviet Army Song and Dance performed “Smuglyanka.”

The song tells the story of a young partisan girl from a Red Army unit operating in Moldova.

It was sung both at the front and in the rear. However, it gained nationwide fame after appearing in the 1973 film “Only „Old Men“ Are Going Into Battle.”
