The First Enemy Aircraft Shot Down on the Territory of the Moldavian SSR

At dawn on June 22, 1941, the territory of the republic was subjected to bombing by enemy aircraft. After the signal of an air attack, 10 Soviet MiG-3 fighters took to the sky. 85 enemy bombers were heading towards them. The pilots of the 5th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment managed to destroy several German planes in the unequal battle.

“The war for us began with the bombing of Chișinău. We woke up early in the morning when the glass was shattering from the bomb explosions on the boulevard. I remember the low-flying German planes with crosses on their fuselages, making a fierce, terrifying roar. Black bomb points were breaking off from the planes. Scared, I shouted to my grandmother Tzeitl, ‘Pray to God!'” — memories of a local resident about the first days of the war in 1941.
